My best friend from school lived in Clitheroe. I must have been about 15 when I went to stay at her family home for the first time. Her father was an extremely dashing man, an architect of Palladian expression. Her mother, a paragon of understated elegance - navy Jean Muir and symmetrical pots of exquisite orchids. I went to my first fashion show on this visit, Paul Costelloe, and met the man himself. I have always, therefore, associated the North with the height of sophistication and good taste.
